Summer Thinking: T3 is District 102’s academic-based summer offering for our middle grade students. It is a general enrichment opportunity with the primary goal of engagement. T3 is open to ALL interested students! What is “SUMMER THINKING: T3”? Tier (Graphic Novels), Terms (Algebra), & Technology (Sphero) Summer Thinking: T3 is an exciting, very active event based on the integration of literacy, algebraic thinking, and technology. The intent is to create motivation and engagement through primarily hands-on learning and choice. Students will study graphic novels and work toward developing their own. Also in this class, the mystery of the “language of algebra” will be solved through the use of a visual and kinesthetic approach. In this concrete manner, manipulatives that include pawns and a balance are used to introduce and solidify algebraic concepts such as: unknowns, evaluate an expression, combining like terms, balancing equations, and solving equations with unknowns on both sides. Finally, the third “T” is technology. Summer Thinkers will be exploring with Spheros. A Sphero is an app controlled robotic ball. Using SMART Bluetooth technology, it is programmed to complete a “journey” with a code that is completely written by the student. Camp is an exciting, very active event based on the idea of exposing and educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Rather than teach these four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, S.T.E.M. Camp will integrate them through real-world applications and tools. The goal is to make it as much of an interdisciplinary and applied approach as possible. We want to introduce S.T.E.M. in a very hands-on and fun manner to hopefully spark a passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in YOU! SCIENCE TOY SHOP - Primary Camp - Ms. Hohl - grades 1&2 CODING FEST - Intermediate Camp - Ms. Vaiciulis - grades 3-5 Location: The S.T.E.M. Camps are held at Zak Science/STEM Center (930 Barnsdale Rd, La Grange Park). "Please note that this is different than the district’s Extended School Year (ESY) programs. In addition to the varying focus themes, grade level mathematics and games will be included in Destiny: IMAGINATION. Technology is used as a tool to support the goals of this experience. Destiny: Imagination Grade 1 = “I CAN DREAM …” Grade 2 = “I CAN SOLVE …” Grade 3 = “I CAN INVENT …” Grade 4 = “I CAN BUILD …” Grade 5 = “I CAN REIMAGINE …” Location: Destiny: IMAGINATION is held at Forest Road School (901 Forest Road, La Grange Park). Students who choose to attend S.T.E.M. Camp will stay for lunch/recess at Forest Road and then be walked to the Zak Science/STEM Center (930 Barnsdale Rd, La Grange Park).
