Summer Thinking: T3 is District 102’s academic-based summer offering for our middle grade students. It is a general enrichment opportunity with the primary goal of engagement. T3 is open to ALL interested students! What is “SUMMER THINKING: T3”? Tier (Graphic Novels), Terms (Algebra), & Technology (Sphero) Summer Thinking: T3 is an exciting, very active event based on the integration of literacy, algebraic thinking, and technology. The intent is to create motivation and engagement through primarily hands-on learning and choice. Students will study graphic novels and work toward developing their own. Also in this class, the mystery of the “language of algebra” will be solved through the use of a visual and kinesthetic approach. In this concrete manner, manipulatives that include pawns and a balance are used to introduce and solidify algebraic concepts such as: unknowns, evaluate an expression, combining like terms, balancing equations, and solving equations with unknowns on both sides. Finally, the third “T” is technology. Summer Thinkers will be exploring with Spheros. A Sphero is an app controlled robotic ball. Using SMART Bluetooth technology, it is programmed to complete a “journey” with a code that is completely written by the student.
